Mouse Issues
If your mouse is unresponsive, lagging, or disconnects intermittently, itβs often caused by power, driver, or signal problems. Use the following steps to identify and fix the issue.
π‘ Applies to: Windows 10, Windows 11, USB, wireless, and Bluetooth mice.
π Step 1: Check Connections
- Unplug and reconnect the mouse to a working **USB port**.
- Try a different port or another computer to confirm itβs not a hardware failure.
- For wireless mice, **replace or recharge the batteries** and make sure the power switch is on.
- If itβs a **Bluetooth mouse**, verify itβs connected under Settings β Bluetooth & devices.
π§° Step 2: Check Receiver or Wireless Dongle
- Unplug the receiver, wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in.
- Try moving the receiver to a **different port**, preferably on the front of your PC or a short extension cable.
- Avoid connecting through a USB hub β plug directly into the computer instead.
βοΈ Step 3: Update or Reinstall Mouse Drivers
- Press Win + X β select Device Manager.
- Expand Mice and other pointing devices.
- Right-click your mouse β Update driver β Search automatically.
- If issues continue, right-click again β Uninstall device, then restart the PC to reinstall automatically.
π§ͺ Step 4: Disable USB Power Saving
- Open **Device Manager** and expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click each **USB Root Hub** β select **Properties** β open the **Power Management** tab.
- Uncheck **Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power**.
β‘ Step 5: Check for Lag or Interference
- Ensure the receiver isnβt too far from the mouse β ideally within 2β3 feet.
- Keep the receiver away from **routers, cell phones, or metal surfaces** that may cause interference.
- Use a **mouse pad** β glass or reflective surfaces can confuse the sensor.
π§Ή Step 6: Clean the Mouse Sensor
- Power off or disconnect the mouse.
- Clean the sensor lens with a **soft cloth or cotton swab**.
- Remove any debris or dust around the scroll wheel or buttons.
π Step 7: Bluetooth & Wireless Fixes
- Re-pair the device in Settings β Bluetooth & devices.
- Make sure Windows is fully up to date β Settings β Windows Update.
- Replace batteries or charge the device fully before testing again.
β
After following these steps, most mouse connection or lag issues are resolved.
If not, try another mouse β if that works, your original mouse may be failing.
