Keyboard Issues
Whether your keyboard isnβt typing, keys are sticking, or certain inputs lag or fail entirely, the problem could be connection-related, driver-based, or due to accessibility settings. Use the guide below to fix keyboard problems quickly and effectively.
π‘ Applies to: Windows 10, Windows 11, wired, wireless, and laptop keyboards.
π Step 1: Check Connections
- Ensure the keyboard is **firmly plugged into a working USB port**.
- Try connecting to another port or a different computer to confirm the keyboard works.
- For **wireless keyboards**, check that the batteries are charged and the power switch is on.
- For **Bluetooth keyboards**, open Settings β Bluetooth & devices to verify the device is paired and connected.
π Step 2: Restart or Reinstall Keyboard Driver
- Press Win + X β choose Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards.
- Right-click your keyboard β Uninstall device.
- Restart your PC. The driver reinstalls automatically.
If that doesnβt work, right-click again and select Update driver β Search automatically.
π§° Step 3: Run Windows Keyboard Troubleshooter
- Press Win + I to open **Settings**.
- Navigate to System β Troubleshoot β Other troubleshooters.
- Find and run the **Keyboard** troubleshooter.
βοΈ Step 4: Check Accessibility & Filter Keys
Windows accessibility features can interfere with normal typing.
- Press Win + U to open **Accessibility β Keyboard**.
- Turn **Filter Keys**, **Sticky Keys**, and **Toggle Keys** off.
π» Step 5: For Laptop Keyboards
- Plug in an **external USB keyboard** β if it works, the issue may be hardware-related.
- Restart the laptop and press the appropriate key (often F2 or Del) to enter **BIOS/UEFI**.
- If keys donβt respond in BIOS, contact IT or the device manufacturer for service.
π§Ό Step 6: Clean the Keyboard
- Power off your PC or disconnect the keyboard first.
- Use compressed air to blow dust out from under the keys.
- Wipe with a microfiber cloth β avoid liquid cleaners or sprays.
- Check for physically stuck or damaged keys.
π Step 7: Wireless & Bluetooth Fixes
- Replace batteries or charge the keyboard fully.
- Unpair and re-pair the device in Bluetooth settings.
- Remove potential interference β routers, metal objects, or USB 3.0 hubs can cause lag.

Most keyboard issues are fixed after checking connections, reinstalling drivers, or adjusting Filter Keys settings.
