Microsoft Account Self-Service Portal
This guide helps users reset or unlock their Microsoft 365 accounts using the self-service password reset (SSPR) portal — without needing to contact IT support.
1️⃣ Access the Self-Service Portal
- Go to passwordreset.microsoftonline.com.
- Choose one of the following options:
- I forgot my password — if you can’t remember it.
- I know my password, but can’t sign in — if your account is locked.
- Enter your work or school email (e.g. user@company.com).
- Complete verification using your registered method — phone, text, or the Microsoft Authenticator app.
Tip: Bookmark mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info to easily manage your verification methods and MFA settings.
2️⃣ Reset or Unlock Your Account
- If resetting your password, make sure the new one meets Microsoft’s password policy:
- At least 8 characters
- Includes uppercase and lowercase letters
- Contains at least one number and one symbol
- Once verification is complete, your account unlocks automatically and you can sign in with your new password.
Good Practice: Use a passphrase instead of a simple password — for example, “
MyLaptopRuns@9AM” — for better security and easier recall.
3️⃣ Windows Login Screen Option
- At your Windows login screen, click Reset password (if enabled by IT).
- Verify your identity with your chosen method (phone, email, or Authenticator).
- Set a new password and log in normally.
Note: If the “Reset password” option does not appear, your organization may not have SSPR enabled at the device level.
4️⃣ Troubleshooting
- Can’t verify identity? — Contact your IT helpdesk to manually reset your password.
- No “Reset password” option? — Check whether SSPR is enabled for your user group.
- Lost phone or Authenticator app? — Ask IT to remove your old MFA methods so you can re-register.
Warning: Never share verification codes or links with anyone — even if the message claims to be from Microsoft support.
