Reset Your Password

If you’ve forgotten your password or your account has expired, you can reset it using one of the methods below. These steps apply to both Microsoft 365 (cloud) and on-premises Active Directory accounts with Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) enabled.

🔹 Option 1 — Use the Windows Login Screen (Ctrl + Alt + Delete)

  1. At the Windows sign-in screen, press Ctrl + Alt + Delete.
  2. Click Reset password (this link appears only if your organization has enabled self-service resets).
  3. Enter your work email address (e.g., user@company.com).
  4. Complete identity verification — typically via SMS, email, or the Microsoft Authenticator app.
  5. Create a new password that meets your organization’s security requirements:
    • At least 8 characters long
    • Contains uppercase and lowercase letters
    • Includes at least one number and symbol
  6. Click Finish and sign in with your new password.
Tip: If you don’t see the Reset password option, your device might not be joined to Azure AD or SSPR isn’t enabled. You can still reset your password using the online portal below.

🔹 Option 2 — Use the Microsoft Online Self-Service Portal

  1. Open a browser and go to passwordreset.microsoftonline.com.
  2. Enter your work or school email address.
  3. Follow the prompts to verify your identity using a registered method (text, call, or Microsoft Authenticator).
  4. Set a new password that meets company policy requirements.
  5. Return to portal.office.com and sign in with your new password.
Good Practice: After resetting your password, restart your devices and re-sign into apps like Outlook or Teams to ensure your credentials sync correctly.

🔹 Option 3 — Reset or Change While Logged In

  1. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete.
  2. Select Change a password.
  3. Enter your current password, then your new password twice.
  4. Click OK and confirm the success message.

🔹 Still Locked Out?

Warning: Never share verification codes or links from Microsoft password reset emails or texts. IT will never ask for them directly.
